Reduced AWS Infrastructure Costs by 30% with FinOps Optimisation

  • 2026-03-08 04:38:49

How Prospiretech’s cloud architecture team helped a fast-growing SaaS platform reduce infrastructure costs, improve utilisation, and establish strong cloud governance.

Results Snapshot

• 30% AWS Cost Reduction

• 40% Infrastructure Utilisation Improvement

• $ 120K Annualized Savings

• Zero Performance Impact

Executive Summary

A fast-growing B2B SaaS platform serving more than 200 enterprise customers across North America and Europe was experiencing unsustainable cloud cost growth. While platform usage grew by 45% year over year, the company’s AWS spend had increased by nearly 70%, significantly impacting margins.

Prospiretech’s cloud architecture and FinOps specialists conducted a structured cloud optimisation engagement focused on infrastructure rightsizing, storage optimisation, commitment strategy, and governance improvements. Within 90 days, the client achieved a 30% reduction in AWS infrastructure costs—equivalent to approximately $120K in annualised savings—without any impact on system performance, reliability, or scalability.

Client Profile

Industry: B2B SaaS – Enterprise Workflow Automation

Customers: 200+ enterprise customers across 5 countries

Cloud Environment: AWS (primary), Azure used for select workloads

Monthly AWS Spend (Before Optimisation): ~$33K

Engineering Team Size: 60+ engineers

Growth Rate: 45% YoY platform usage growth

The Challenge

As the platform scaled rapidly, several infrastructure inefficiencies accumulated across their AWS environment.

• Over-provisioned compute instances running far above actual workload requirements.

• Storage sprawl with large volumes of rarely accessed data kept in expensive tiers.

• Idle and orphaned infrastructure resources across multiple AWS accounts.

• Underutilised Reserved Instances due to workload architecture changes.

• Lack of tagging standards and cost visibility across engineering teams.

• Reactive auto-scaling configurations that either under‑performed or over‑scaled.

Solution Approach

Prospiretech’s cloud architects executed a phased optimisation program combining deep infrastructure analysis with targeted remediation actions.

1. Infrastructure Audit & Cost Analysis

A full-stack infrastructure audit was performed covering EC2, RDS, S3, EBS, and networking resources. Utilisation metrics across 90 days of CloudWatch data were analysed to identify underutilised and oversized resources.

2. Compute Rightsizing & Scheduling

More than 180 EC2 instances were analysed for CPU, memory, and network usage. Several instances were rightsized to more appropriate instance families and sizes, while non-production workloads were placed on automated start/stop schedules.

Auto-scaling configurations were redesigned to better align with traffic patterns, improving resource efficiency while maintaining performance.

3. Storage Optimisation

Storage lifecycle policies were introduced to move infrequently accessed data into lower-cost storage tiers. Unused EBS snapshots and unattached volumes were identified and removed, reducing unnecessary monthly storage costs.

Database storage was also optimized by transitioning certain high-cost storage configurations to more efficient alternatives while maintaining performance.

4. Commitment Strategy Optimization

The existing Reserved Instance portfolio was reviewed and realigned with actual workload requirements. A balanced strategy using Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, and on-demand capacity was implemented to optimize compute pricing.

5. Governance & Cost Visibility

A standardised tagging framework was implemented across the AWS environment to enable cost allocation by team, environment, and product.

Budget alerts, anomaly monitoring, and cost reporting dashboards were also introduced to provide engineering and finance teams with better cost visibility.

Results (Within 90 Days)

Monthly AWS Spend: Reduced from ~$33K to ~$23K

Infrastructure Utilization: Improved from ~18% to ~58%

Orphaned Resources: Eliminated through structured cleanup

Cost Visibility: Introduced team-level cost tracking

Operational Impact: No downtime or performance degradation

Business Impact

The infrastructure optimization delivered meaningful financial and operational improvements.

• Improved gross margins through significant infrastructure cost reduction.

• Greater financial predictability for budgeting and forecasting.

• Stronger engineering accountability for infrastructure usage.

• A scalable cloud governance framework to prevent future cost sprawl.
